‘Anxious Times’ at Stanford – and in the world

Original post made by Diana Diamond, Palo Alto Online blogger, on Oct 14, 2006

I heard a depressing but also a fascinating debate at Stanford University on Saturday morning, Oct. 14, on "Anxious Times – Seeing Beyond a World of Perpetual Threats."

Diana, Certainly, there are many things to think, and worry about - and many actions to take; everything you pointed to requires a solution, or attention.

At the same time, it's important to realize that we can all do small things, good things, no matter our place, status, financial situation, etc. We can, each one of us, discover thhose small steps that work for us.

In the meantime, here are a few brief antidotes

It sounds like a very interesting debate and definitely a learned group. However, as a researcher, I am paid to nit-pick. While all eight have some sort of tie to Stanford, only five of them attended as students. George Schultz has degrees from Princeton and MIT, John Hennessy has his degrees from Villanova and State University of New York at Stoney Brook, and Lucy Shapiro has degrees from Brooklyn College and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. This certainly doen't make them less interesting, but it's such an easy thing to look up!
