Schools & Kids, posted by joe sparaco, a resident of Mountain View, on Sep 30, 2006 at 9:24 am

Boys and Girls between the ages of 8 and 17 are elegable to race in the All-American Soap Box Derby and compete for trophies and even College Scholarship.

The Palo Alto Elks are the new sponsors for the Silicon Valley Soap Box Derby, and invite all kids and their parents to come to a fun event on October 8th starting at 5:30pm. We will be showing off our new fleet of race cars, showing a movie about the Soap Box Derby, explaining how to get involved in our club, and share in some delightful desserts to cap the evening.

Check our web site at www.svsbd.com and plan to attend this exciting new community relations oriented program.

This event, Nationally sponsored by NASCAR, is the only sporting event I know of that Handicapped children can compete on a level playing field with non handicapped kids. The winners are rewarded with trips, gifts, trophies and even College Scholarship Money.

Check us out at www.svsbd.com and then come to our FREE Movie night Sunday the 8th of October starting at 5:30pm

How do we find out about ordering a car to race. What is the deadline?

The All American Soap Box Derby controls sales of the cars. You can order on line by going to www.aasbd.com Good luck, and hope to see you at our event.

WOW!

We came close to winning the Vallejo Soap Box Derby this past weekend. The only car faster than our fastest car was a champion from Oregon who raced last year at Akron Ohio in the All American and took a fifth place there. He only beat our Palo Alto Elks Car by 2 / 100ths of a second to win Sunday. If you would have come to our clinic, weekend before last, you might have been there with us as we had to leave six cars home due to not having enough drivers. If you're between ages 8 and 17, boy or girl, and are interested in driving a race car with us, please check us out at www.svsbd.com and give us a call. You could join our club and have a blast in your own Soap Box Derby Car.

We raced in Vallejo against some of the fastest Soap Box Derby race cars in the Western United States and took a Second in the Super Stock class and a Seventh in the Stock Class. Palo Alto residents Michael Margison and Talija McBeth were the most successful of our racers and took home trophies for their efforts.

The club recently formed at the Elks Lodge in Palo Alto is planning a Mt. View Championship race in June of '07 from which two kids will get a chance to race in the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron Ohio in July of '07.(Win College Scholarships, Bicycles, Levi's Clothing etc).

Any kids interested in joining our club, and think they would enjoy racing one of our club cars in the June event, should call me and plan on attending our up-coming meetings with a parent.
