Stanford baseball program loses longtime administrative associate
Crimes & Incidents, posted by Editor, Palo Alto Online, on Jun 15, 2008 at 12:49 am

When the Stanford baseball team takes on Florida State on Saturday in the opening round of the College World Series, it will be with heavy hearts following the death of one of the most beloved members of the program. Kathy Wolff, who worked in the Stanford athletic department for 23 years, including the last 21 as an administrative associate to the baseball and women's volleyball programs, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Wednesday.

What this story lacks in clarity, it makes up for it with its violations in "Journalism 101" -- the most-flagrant of which was the detail that Stanford players wore "CW" patches on their sleeves. We can only guess that the "CW" patch was a tribute to "Cathy Wolfe," the popular person who was also known as "Kathy Wolff." Since Keith Peters' name appears at the bottom of this story, is it safe to assume that this confusing and inaccurate report occurred on his watch? ++++ For those of us who authored the first, full-length sports feature story in the Palo Alto Weakling back in '93 -- and for those of us who spent many hours in the early '90s socializing with Kathy Wolff, this is the type of incomplete and amateurish reporting which does a disservice to someone of Kathy's professionalism and charisma. ++++ For the record, this story which incorrectly I.D.'ed "KW" patches as "CW" patches also failed to provide Kathy Wolff's age at the time of her untimely passing. Hopefully, Stanford's head baseball coach, Mark Marcus, will never see this ...

Rolo,

It's easier to critize someone when you know you're the guy who always gets away with it. It's on the hush, hush and confidental.
