Solar Panels at Utilities on Bayshore

Original post made by Resident on Mar 16, 2008

Just noticed that a lot of solar panels have appeared at the Utilities place on Bayshore (I wasn't driving so perhaps that is why I saw them for the first time). Anyone know how long they have been there and the story behind them?

You mean the ones at the corporate yard?

Here's a link I Googled up a while back. Web Link and it still works. It's probably only one side of the story, though.

Another Engineer,

I had missed that link on the cost/benefit of the tracking solar panels over at the municipal utilities center. Although it is a serious issue, it was done with a certain aplomb, and even a little humor.

Good one!

We need more efforts like this, because there are so many misconceptions about energy generation among us, especially local political leaders. I do understand that Palo Alto wants to make a symbolic statement about solar efforts, however there should be at least some truth in advertising: The efficieny of PV panels will need to increase by about an order of magnitude to make economic sense. The "ugly" factor will need to be determined by the beholders. I, personally, would prefer high efficiency flat panels on commerical rooftops, where they cannot be seen. Holographic technologies offer some promise in this regard.

Thanks.

Why didn't they put them inside the gates of the municipal yard? Outside the gates along East Bayshore, I bet they get vandalized and need constant repair.

Thank you Another Engineer for the web link. This is another example of our City Council spending money without determining the cost/benefit return. This is an extremely expensive symbolic statement about solar power.

I think those panels are outside the fence because they are supposed to be on show. They're not for a practical purpose.
