On Deadline: A long parade of city managers along bumpy roads

Original post made on Dec 12, 2007

Sitting in the seventh-floor office of Frank Benest Nov. 27 talking about his announced retirement involved a sudden rush déjà vu — a feeling of "I've been here before."

Frank Benest is a good man who trusted his chief deputy, his department heads and his fellow appointed officials to do the right thing far too often. Sadly, in the end some of them let him down badly.

Frank Benest played our city council like a violin, getting the most out of the taxpayers, while letting down the city badly.

Would that those who criticize Mr. Benest had to walk in his shoes - even for a little while.

We have a populace that is mostly happy with the way that government is run.

As for past City Councils, the only City Councils that get "played" are those that fail to coalesce into a strong policy-making unit. It's not a City Manager's fault is his overseers can't get it together.

Thus, in spite of having (until very recently) to deal with weak policy-making bodies, Mr. Benest accomplished a lot in spite of them.

I wish him well.

Management is what it is called because it manages, not alibis.

Civitas;
What you have said about"Trusted his Chief Deputy's, Department heads" {TOO DO THE RIGHT THING} I feel is very true, however, in his position he MUST make sure that these people ARE doing the RIGHT thing. Telling the truth, following the law and doing there jobs.. No excuses..
It is his job to make sure the City Counsel gets the truth. Not excuses or part truths.
Mr Benest in your next position you will be starting a new.. Please remember the little people..and..The Citizens. We are all not polititions. Some of us just want to do are jobs,be supported in the work enviorment and then go home to are family, friends and pets.. The Simple people.
Good Luck....Good Health

Benest is being paid over $200K a year to "trust people"?

Well, given the performance of the Police Chief (Lynne Johnson), the Utilities (Ulrich) and the Assistant City Manager (Harrison) during his tenure--it's fair to say that his trust was misplaced and that he should have been replaced long before this.

And what are his "achievements" again?

He achieved excellent compensation for his efforts.

Frank Benest has done a good job during his time in office. Most of you with negative comments should spen a day or two in his shoes and deal with the issues that he faced during his time as city manager. The problem is these spoiled TPAR's
