City Employees Award Ceremony Around Town, posted by Walker, a resident of the South of Midtown neighborhood, on Oct 4, 2007 at 12:37 pm
To-day (10/4)there are many happy Palo Alto city employees enjoying a catered lunch in the band circle at Mitchell Park. It is their annual award ceremony in which employees are acknowledged for every 5 years of service they give to the City.
The streets around Mitchell Park are a mass of City owned vehicles, fire trucks, paramedics vehicles, police cruisers, animal services trucks, tree trimming trucks, and every conceivable size of City owned utility vehicle. It is quite a sight!!
I'm pleased to report that our City employees looked very happy!!

Do our city employees really have Friday off?! I was pretty disappointed with the spinless negotiating tactics showed by the city in the last union contract talks. Even a former Mayor was outraged by the giant giveaways in that contract.
I know our employees are overpaid, but are they really underworked to the extent that they have three day weekends like this. Who approved this policy?

How many times does it have to be explained before people get it? City workers who get every other Friday off do so by working longer days the rest of the time. Everyone works what amounts to 40 hours a week. That's full-time, folks. They also get off LEGAL holidays. I know a numer of city workers, and believe me they are not overpaid. Compare them to other places - the salaries are about average. They do have decent benefits. Shouldn't everyone?
