From the sound of PAPD managing parking lots near Bayshore, it sounds like most people decided to take a car to go walk. 8PM and lots are already filled. Traffic is being diverted already.

How strange, I guess no one wanted to Walk to the Walk. ;-) I'm not surprised with all the muggings and robberies that folks wouldn't want to stray far from their steel cocoon.

At Escondido Elementary this morning, the bike racks were jam packed, and lots of other kids were coming by scooter and walking. A big group walked and biked all the way from Evergreen Park, very grateful for the adult crossing guard that was added to the Stanford Avenue/El Camino Real intersection last year.

Volunteers were passing out reflective stickers, and children were turning in stars with their names to post on on a Walk and Roll Hall of Fame. Big smiles everywhere.

Many families who live in Escondido Village, College Terrace and Evergreen Park walk or come by bike/scooter every day. Wouldn't it be great if some of the families who come from other neighborhoods would try biking or carpooling -- even once or twice a week -- after this week is over?

We had a great turnout at Palo Verde also. It would be wonderful if the effort people made today could be continued even if only on an occasional basis.

This is a wonderful event that gets better every year. Thanks to all the volunteers who made this happen. I have seen kids who walked distances that are unreasonably long to do every day, but they have been beaming and tremendously proud when they do it once and get rewarded for it. For others, the one day event can lead to doing it more often. It sometimes takes a big deal like this to get people to realize that it is possible and worthwhile to walk or roll to school. Even once a week would be a big help in terms of improving fitness and reducing congestion and pollution.
