What is with the flying infestation?
Around Town, posted by bugged family, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on Sep 23, 2007 at 1:30 pm

Can someone please tell us what all those flying bugs are? They are really bad in midtown, but in driving around town an hour ago, we noticed that the bugs are everywhere. What are they? Why are they here? Thanks!

Could it be ants swarming after the first rain of the season? I saw them this morning and I think that's what it seems to be...

Could it be ants swarming....or termites.

The winged termite is very similar to winged ants. The difference is that termite antenae are straight, whilst ant's have a kink. Also, the termite has no "waist".

I'm not an expert by any means but my guess is that they are termites. As soon as they land, their wings fall off and they start looking for a place to live. This happens at least once a year. Thank you "insects" for posting the physical difference between the two. Next time I see a swarm I am going to get a closer look.
