Mallory did do very well, but Schiavone turned up the heat just when she needed it, the mark of a champion, even if her ranking no longer shows that. Mallory has a great ground game, but if she is to be a serious contender for the top 20 or 30, she needs to improve her serve and mobility, introduce a tad more variety into her game, and be better prepared to handle the variety thrown at her by smart opponents. Schiavone could rarely outhit her, but often confounded her with slice backhands and offspeed shots. Mallory will have a career, but needs to kick up her game another notch if she is to contend with the top players.
