seatbelts and car seats -- always
and slow down everyone
What a needless death. I don't feel safe driving without my safety belt on.
[Portion removed by Palo Alto Online staff.] How terrifying for all involved, as well as other drivers. I am so sorry for that poor young girl.
What I can't stand is the fact that the real reason why this happened is not sated in the report! Drivers need to watch out for cars coming into intersections. Cutting people off in highways is horrible! And this is a case where a car cut them off and caused them to loose control. This is my family and my little cousin was the one who passed away and for the idiot who did this to them I hope you live with your conscious killing you inside for the rest of your life because of you my family lives in pain and sorrow for ever because we lost a beautiful angel in this world! Drive safer people you never know what it can cause! I love you Cousin <3
I am so sorry. Please know that many people share your and your family's sadness about your cousin.
A bigger danger on the roads than not wearing your seat belt, are the people who think they have no room for improvement wrt their driving habits, and everyone else watch out for them and needs to get out of the way. Things will get better once drivers realize:
"I'm the one in the 2 ton vehicle. I'm the one who needs to take special care. I'm the one who needs to watch out, not everyone else.
I can be part of the solution, or remain the biggest part of the problem."
RIP sweet girl
This is indeed very tragic, but the fact remains, this was an extended cab pickup with 8 occupants, either all inside or some in the outside bed (illegal), and at least some were not wearing seat belts (also illegal). The driver was at least in part culpable for this tragedy.
Sadly, I must agree w/ "David". Law are in place to protect us from our own, and others', poor choices when driving. Ignoring common sense just adds to the probability of a bad outcome. The other driver may be guilty of contributing to the accident which resulted in significant injuries and death(s), but their lawyer could argue that, "...if the driver had not overloaded the vehicle, or provided restraints for all occupants, the outcome might well have been different". Which is true.
None of which helps a family who has lost a beloved girl, and who wait to see how other family members fair.
My sincerest condolences for your loss and the injuries to your family. Recently I almost lost control of my own compact SUV in order to avoid someone who came up very fast on my left while I was trying to execute a lane change with my turn indicator engaged and traveling at the posted speed limit on 280, I can appreciate how quickly these things happen.
We all need to be more vigilant, drive defensively, and mindfully.
I guess all those who would constantly spout "Nany State" at laws like the seat belt law are a-ok with this and see no reason for improvement of the situation.
Whether they got cut off or not. We all need to b carefull,
But seriously more passengers than seat belts. I would never
Have my children or any other passengers with no
Seat belt for this same reason. We never know what we may encounter.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
SEAT BELTS PEOPLE!!!! speacial with children!
The child's death is tragic. Condolences to the family. I'm very sorry for your losses.
I hope no one who reads this article ever again illegally puts 8 people in a F-150 & doesn't use seat belts. It's a terrible way to learn that belts can prevent passengers being thrown out of vehicles. Even the oversized cab trucks, with a row of seats behind the driver, is legal for only 5 people.
Careless, speeding lane changers should be reported by cell phone to CHP. Call 911. Signs ask us to call in drunk drivers. Reckless drivers are just as bad.
I'm going to say it once again: If you put too many people in your vehicle, sans seatbelts, & drive on a fast highway, & there are children involved, and you're an adult in the vehicle, you're negligent. A girl died as a result, others injured. Perhaps she would've survived if she'd been wearing a seatbelt & perhaps the other unfortunates would be less injured. The horror likely would've been reduced with following the law. There are good reasons for vehicle safety laws & we need to remember this.
