Palo Alto launches contest for bike bridge design

Original post made on Jun 25, 2013

Palo Alto leaders want their new bike bridge to be many things -- elegant, eco-friendly, unique, eye-catching, and above all affordable. On Monday, the council decided that the best way to get to the winning look is through a design competition.

Is this the essentially the same article reposted 3 days in a row with all the previous reader comments deleted again? Instead posting the same comments over and over, just read the old ones here: Web Link

"..a higher cost, a greater investment of staff time, a "slightly longer process" and a transfer of some control over the process to a jury..."

Those are just "some negatives"? Sounds pretty much like all negatives to me. Palo Alto is not that special and does not need a "unique and different" bike bridge.

I see that the Liz Kniss Commemorative Bike Bridge forges forward, duplicating the San Antonio overpass a couple of blocks away.

San Antonio has a sidewalk, and fence to keep folk from plummeting into traffic below. Been using it, death free, for 50 years, so far.

As with all Palo Alto projects this will probably come in for $15-$20 M after fab and design errors are corrected, design updates are dictated, consultant fees expended, etc. Meanwhile 2-3 years will pass.

I'm sure the 2 dozen bikers a week will really appreciate your bridge, Liz.
$10 M here, $10 M there, pretty soon you are talkin' real money!
