Most of these violent crimes are being done by teenagers. The laws need to be made more harsh for these criminal teens. They know they can get away with murder just because they are teens. Anyone commiting violent crimes should be tried as adults.
These kids think being "gangsta" is cool. We need to change their mentality and outlook on life. If harsher sentences are given, I think this would help. Most of these kids would not survive months in an adult jail w/o being put into solitary confinement but that's exactly where they need to be so the "old School" can teach them a lesson or two. Some will never change, some will become productive adults. These kids need parenting and something to do, plain and simple.
I grew up in the Gardens and it breaks my heart that I would not even consider living in EPA anymore. In the 70's it was safer, we would go out at night, play in the street, walk to the store alone at 7 & 8 yrs old. Just sad.
@something: I can't find data for the 70's, maybe you can post it.
Murders/year in EPA from the web site city stats
More prisons don't work. California’s state prison population peaked at 173,000 in 2006. At that, California penal institutions were operating at 175% of their design capacity.
Want to change it? Quit starving schools and overfeeding prisons.
- 760 of every 100,000 Americans is incarcerated, more than seven times the incarceration rates for most European countries
- Those high incarceration rates have forced states across the country to spend more on prisons than they do on education.
- California spent $9.6 billion on prisons in 2011, only $5.7 billion on higher education
- CA spends $8,667 per student, per year compared to roughly $50,000 per inmate, per year
- In the last 30 years CA has built 20 new prisons but just one college campus
Reverse those numbers and we have a great century ahead of us. Keep those numbers and live in fear and a declining economy, subservient to China, India, the oil states, etc..
America, home of the free (to be fearful.)
Unless you're already in jail.
This info is wrong. 3 of the 4 occupants were shot; 1 was killed.
Gosh, why were school-aged teens allowed out "socializing" at that time of night? Didn't they know about the current gang war? And where were their parents?
Maybe the police need to be more strict with curfew laws? Where are the parents of these young people? So sad that this happened. We all have to suffer and be afraid because of gang members. I think the police should just arrest all the gang members. JUST DO IT!
"where were their parents?"
That's the root of the issue. If parents would respect and love their children, they wouldn't run amock.
@Home of the free: More colleges won't help the criminals. You think these gang-bangers can concentrate in school? Ha. We need more prisons but less luxury inside prisons. These kids need to be Scared Straight so when they leave prison they never want to return. If they think they can commit a crime and get a slap on the wrist, they will continue to commit crimes. Maybe counselors in prison so they can plan their return to society?
> We need more prisons
Hasn't worked so far, what's that definition of insanity?
>> but less luxury inside prisons.
Contrary to most religious beliefs AND the Bill of Rights("nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted") But first - good Lord, what 'luxury' are you talking about?!!?!?!?
Secondly, the United States Supreme Court (hardly a bunch of liberal do-gooders these days) thinks your attitude is specious, and actually harmful. Poor health care delivery prompted the U. S. Supreme Court to order the transfer or release of more than 30,000 California prisoners. Silly old Constitution!
Education and jobs are the only cure for recidivism, if returning inmates without a job are not Scared Straight, then why would it work on teens?
Lastly: do all the posters here lock up their own teens after 9pm? Okay. Thought so. Didn't work for me either.
This is so sad. Why would anyone carry a gun, what a bunch of cowards. Dont they realize that the only ones they are hurting is the family. What did this prove? NOTHING at all, i hope this person gets caught and rots in jail. NO one has the right to take someone else's life. Its sad that you cant even walk the streets. I am so glad i moved from EPA. I hope this city gets cleaned up. Parents please keep your kids safe, there is no reason why a kid should be outside just talking, use the phone or text. NO one is safe now a days. As a mother i recommend us keeping our kids on a short leash. The less friends your child has the less problems or worries. My son just contacted me about this, sadly they went to middle school together, and now the innocent child is gone. It breaks my heart, how these so called GANGSTERS think killing someone will make them superior, nothing but stupid looking idiots. I HATE THEM ALL....
Our prisons are luxury to some of these criminals. And the ACLU and others stick their nose in and talk about hamainly housing these animals or humainly putting them to death if on the death penalty. These criminals kill people in the most un humane ways. Jails should not be pleasant at all. If they have to be crammed, then ohh well. Then people might think twice before doing stuff that will land them in there.
Baba - there's a big difference between 9pm & 11pm, as I'm sure you know. Myself & my siblings were held accountable to our curfews. That's the clue - accountability - the parents need to be accountable for their kids' actions - as well as their own actions & inactions. It's completely reasonable for kids under 18, who either work, are in school or both, to be home & even asleep by 11pm.
In the Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice report on crime in EPA, they note that 100% of the known murderers in EPA had prior arrest records and averaged 7 prior arrests. 100% had at least one prior arrest for a violent crime. That clearly says that if we had more people with violent arrest records in prison, we'd have fewer murders. We just need to clear the non-violent drug offenders out of prison to make room for the much smaller number of people who deserve to be there.
My heart and prayers go out to the family of Jose. He was a friend of my son's from elementary thru jr high. I didn't know him very well but he was always respectful and seemed like good young man. It's beyond ridiculous that mothers and fathers are continously burying their children at such alarming rates! We advocate for more police, better programs, better gun and crime laws, etc. How about we start by taking care of the children in our homes and raising them with decency and respect for human lives as well as their own so they don't turn out to be killers. Spend time with your kids, be apart of their lives, love them, support them, DISCIPLINE them and heed the warning signs when they start to stray or drift. Exhaust every option you have as a parent!!! We can blame society, media, tv, video games all day long but the God's honest truth is it starts at home! PERIOD! Being a parent is NOT easy by any means whether single or in a 2 parent home but if you made them, raise them! No father/mother should have to bury their child because another did not raise his/hers! I am praying for ALL the youth in our communities because it is truly going to take an act of God to fix the self destruction in our children.
And btw to the people who think it's just about curfew while my son's have never been allowed to run around willie nillie or all hours of the night, being out late in the evening in YOUR own frontyard should NEVER warrant being shot down and killed like an animal. Maybe that wasn't what you were implying but again it just goes back to my point about parents parenting their kids. Although that action left them vulnerable to the act, it's the perpetrators' parents knowledge of what their children were out doing that I'm most concerned with. It takes a real special kind of person to pull a trigger and take a life. HEARTLESS!!!
Uh, what was the victim & his friends doing out & about at 11pm on a Sunday night? If more youth without criminal records or gang affiliations in EPA were being killed, it would be pretty confusing as to what was going on. This isn't confusing, because it's a gang war. Street gangs have been using guns to kill each other for decades. It's not that being out late should never "warrant" being shot, it's what you're doing that brings it about. He wasn't in his yard, he was in a car. Do you really think that he was some innocent bystander? Maybe, but w/the current gang war(s) going on, I'm pretty skeptical.
xdm wrote: "Our prisons are luxury to some of these criminals" Really? Prove it. Tell us about the luxury.
"And the ACLU and others stick their nose in and talk about hamainly (sic) housing these animals or humainly (sic) putting them to death if on the death penalty." Wasn't the ACLU. It's the United States Bill of Rights, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America. Sorry you don't like America and American values and rights. Just to be clear, you also have the right to leave.
"Jails should not be pleasant at all." Again, let us know where the 'pleasant' jails are, particularly the ones that house death row inmates that you reference.
"If they have to be crammed, then ohh well." Again, that's your view, which conflicts with the Bill of Rights, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America. I can look up the flight schedule to Communist China or Communist Vietnam, if you need help. I hear Syria, as well as a number of Islamic countries seem to fit your opinion of incarceration and punishment. Sounds like your kind of place.
"Then people might think twice before doing stuff that will land them in there." How's that worked so far? As the poster above implied, you may want to look Einstein's definition of insanity.
The previous comment: "Our prisons are a luxury to some of these criminals." This was obviously written by someone who's never seen the inside of a prison. One possibility to prevent these kinds of shootings is to stop every car with multiple teens inside, and search them and the car for weapons. Same with groups of two or more teens outside. Of course, this would be decried as profiling and harassment, much much worse than dying of a gunshot!
@Tommy Jeff & Chris - Here is a great story about an inmate in Baltimore who got 4 different guards pregnant. I'm not sure he was happier out on the streets of Baltimore.
No he was not literally STANDING IN HIS FRONT YARD, however he was sitting in a parked car, DIRECTLY in front of his home/residence! If you want to be specific about it. I don't know what the young man was into what I do know is his parents are making funeral arrangements, his family and friends are in mourning and another killer is running about the streets free as a bird. Although most of the killings that have taken place in EPA over the years have stemmed from beefs and escalated turf wars there have been several INNOCENT killings. I personally lost a 15 year old cousin who WAS NOT IN gangs, associated with gangs or gang affiliated as you put it. If you read my comment I said as a parent my OWN KIDS have never been allowed to hang out all hours of the night, YET because this child was does not mean he should be murdered! If you have not seen the news video footage of this shooting please go take a look on ktvu you will see where the vehicle was and where he lives. My argument wasn't that he was some innocent bystander, my PLEA was for parents to parent their kids, his parents, the shooters parents, the neighbors parents etc so PARENTS can stop burying their kids. What about of that was unclear to you?
STOP THE PRESSES!!!!
HuffPo 'prints' some allegations (without facts) that a gang leader in prison has it better than other inmates! For further evidence, your honor, I submit the scene from Good Fellas as evidence! It's all TWUE, and of course, COMMONPLACE!
With this proof, your honor, I submit we take away ALL THE LUXURIES in our prisons immediately!
Mr Recycle - that's a great find! Shows how ludicrous the 'luxury' claim is - thanks!
Only a matter of time before this spills over into Palo Alto. Armed robberies now, shootings tomarrow.
My thoughts and prayers to all he families and residents of EPA who are losing loved ones and having to endure these terrible crimes.
My understanding is the police will be utilizing extra patrols and have a stronger police presence with the assistence of San Mateo Sheriff's deputies. Additionally, a crack down on known gang members is underway to stir things up and shake up their tank and file. Furthermore the city is looking into programs that have been successful in deterring gang related crimes. With the assistence of community members, local
Churches etc late night basketball programs and other recreational programs are being looked into. Lastly, discussions on a strict curfew is being considered with exceptions for work and what not. This city is too strong to fail our youth!

Now the rest of us, among other things, are going to have to put up w/lackadaisical policing for the next month - at least - while the cops focus on all of this anti-gang garbage that they have to do. As I've seen before, this will mean fewer patrols on my street, a likely longer response time for non-violent crimes, super cranky, tired cops who lack time off & all of this testosterone & adrenaline going toward a bunch of thugs who take it as a challenge.
I'm starting to wish that parents would be held legally accountable when their juveniles get involved in gang crime. Maybe it's time to stop pleading w/parents to actually parent & make them literally responsible for their kids' illegal actions.
Ever wonder how the same drug and gang banging spots can exist for decades? People are getting paid off. Its no secret and the residents know, which is why they rarely talk. If they get the courage to talk they quickly find out why they should've been quiet and probably should've just handled it themselves. 9 times out of 10 they and their family will never talk again. Residents cant/dont trust them so they take matters into their own hands for better or worse. I've been in EPA since the early 80's and the only thing that has changed is the tightness of the community, due to masses moving after the housing boom. EPA is 2.5 sq miles its not that hard to find, target and shut down known drug and gang areas and dealers, if they wanted to. Trust me the residents know this and over the years it has forced them to develop a "every man for themselves" mentality. Hate it or Love it. It is Sad but True.

@Timmy Jeff - Never said it was widespread. I do agree though that The Huffington Post is kinda garbage. Here is a more detailed article from the Baltimore Sun.
Seems Mr Recycle's links continue to show us that incarceration is a failure.
Education and jobs are the best hope to break the cycle. Whining about other kids' parents seems a little hollow to me, though I'm sure it's been going on since language and family units evolved ("did you see Og's son? why that no-goodnik, he's an embarrassment to the clan...")
Tommy Jeff - well written... "it's all TWUE", after all, I saw it on Oz and The Wire, too.

Time for parents to be held legally accountable & for the community to shun the families of gang members. They should make some room to feel a healthy dose of shame for what they've contributed to this otherwise hardworking community filled with honorable people.
Don't miss out on the discussion!
