Phone solicitors suddenly, Anyone else?

Original post made by Irritated, Palo Alto High School, on Feb 21, 2013

Salespeople have been calling me in the mornings, as early as 8:15 this morning. How can they be stopped? I am listed in the phone book but have been for almost a decade with no calls. I registered for the "Do Not Call" list awhile back. Any solutions? I shouldn't have to take my phone off the hook each night to avoid these calls. Thanks for any empathy or solutions.

I'm with you on this one. These new types of calls are not people with whom you can even tell them to take me off their calling list. They are computer generated calls with poorly recorded messages and at times some of the calls don't even have a recording, just a few seconds of silence and then cutting off.

I get them on the landline which I do not want to get rid of for many reasons, but they are basically the only calls that we get on the landline on most days.

What can we do?

Calling people on the do not call list is illegal. Recorded calls without a human introduction are illegal. Report these violations to your phone company and the FTC, especially if you have caller-ID that records their phone number.

Despite being unlisted on our landline, we are getting a ton of scam phone calls, too.
When I went to check the do not call registry there was a warning it had been hacked, so I couldn't tell what is legit. Supposedly one does not drop off the registry anymore. I'm not sure it makes a difference with offshore scammers, some of whom spoof onshore or legitimate numbers so what comes up on your handset may not even be accurate.
Get the numbers off the handset and Google them - we have found "IMPORTANT" and a slew of other designations and phone numbers bring up plenty of posts from people stating "this is a scam," or "this is offshore," or "this is a boiler room operation" and so on. Best suggestion is to ignore; I think if you respond/pick up they continue to call. One person online suggested that when you get multiple calls from a scammer to answer the phone with a line like, "State Attorney General's Office" and you will get no further calls...

We have gotten them at 7:00 am, waking the baby. We finally started answering them and telling them to take us off their list and put us on their do not call list. If they continue, we tell them they are breaking the law, that we have their number on our phone, and that we will report them. So far, so good.

I get this call regularly that says my auto warranty is about to expire
and this call is the last chance I have to renew it ...

So far I have had many many last chances over a period of several
years. Just when I think they are gone I get a whole new wave of them.
If I hang up, I get another call after a while, and if I stay on the line to
tell them not to take me off their list they say sure, but I still get a
call after a while.

Does anyone else get these, they sound like they are local, and for sure
a scam since it is verifiable they are lying right off the bat. This is just
such blatant breaking of the law.
