The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts kicked off in downtown Palo Alto Saturday morning. Thousands of people were on hand for the annual weekend event, which featured hundreds of artists, live music on three stages, wines and microbrews, kids' activities and Italian street painting. Photos by Marjan Sadoughi and Paul Sakuma.

How long has this been known? Seems like short notice to me. One more reason to stay away from downtown.

This happens every year about this time, Walter, you haven't been on vacation on Mars each summer before this, have you?

Not on Mars, just avoiding downtown. I just think two day's notice is inadequate for closing a public right of way.

Happens every year at this time. Fliers all over town, in store windows, etc. Shouldn't be a surprise.

This event has gone on for years. Same time in August, same place, same scenario. Lots of advertisement and press and signs. And it is a lot of fun.

I had a great time there etoday with my family. Thank you palo alto. I wish they closed it every weekend for 1/2 day like they do in sunnyvale.

So disappointed the kid area (except for the hospital table) closed at 5:00, since I arrived there with my kids at about 4:55,under the mistaken impession it would be open until 6:00 like the rest of the festival. I was told the early close was so they'd have time to clean up. Considering that many of the tables were already cleaned up, and the rest were taken care of well before 6:00, I don't quite understand this. My kids were VERY sad that they only got to paint at the one table. MANY thanks to the women who staffed it. Otherwise, the festival was great!
