Why would anyone, with a mentally challenged child, have weapons in their home? Issues Beyond Palo Alto, posted by Sally, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on Dec 17, 2012 at 11:18 am
Mentally unbalanced kids cannot be trusted around weapons, of any type, including hammers and knives. What was this mother thinking, having loaded up her house with guns?

Why assume this woman was mentally intact herself? If gun sales to borderline mental cases were prevented, the gun market and the NRA would shrivel.

One of the articles I have read stated that the mother was a "doomsday prepped", and possibly unbalanced herself, as she believed that the world was on the verge of economic collapse. She collected high-power weapons and practiced target shooting but did not have her guns locked up.
My son read on Strat-For that she was actually afraid of her son and had tried to have him committed to a mental hospital on several occasion. But that involved calling police, and she did not want him to have a criminal record(!). Her other son left home and never returned, and refused to have contact with his younger brother.

Again, be careful assigning motives or third hand information regarding the family this early.
So much of what was reported as fact during the first week of Columbine proved to be COMPLETELY untrue (the trenchcoat mafia, etc..)
