I am very sorry about the loss of life in this crash.
But, on a different note, Palo Alto traffic was terrible last night. It took me 45 minutes to get from south Palo Alto to Stanford. Middlefield, Alma, El Camino, were nightmares and I believe 101 was just as bad. The radio traffic person was basically telling their listeners to stop for dinner and try later anywhere around Palo Alto.
This is what happens with traffic calming measures. Palo Alto can't cope with extra traffic. If the local traffic report tells all motorists to stay away from Palo Alto then we must be a joke to them.

@Needless Loss - Getting out of your car is probably a good thing if you're on the shoulder on the right so long as you move as far right as you can. If you're stopped at the left, close to the median, I think it may be better to actually sit on the median behind the car or even in the car. I'm not sure what the right action is in this case.
