Over the past nine years, Palo Alto has beaten Gunn in their annual football rivalry by an average score of 40-9. Not surprisingly, the Vikings have won all nine. That streak will be on the line when the teams meet on Friday night when the teams meet at Paly at 7:30 p.m.

Another story on the field is how many of these players on both the Gunn and Paly teams came up through the Palo Alto Knights Pop Warner program. At Gunn Andre Guzman, Mike Jorgenson, Marcos Moreno Ramos, Tyrus Whitehead and Kevin Sharp traveled to Florida with Mike Piha to the National Championships in 2009. From Paly (hope I don't forget someone)Andrew Frick, Eric Anderson, and Justin and Jayshawn Mouton. These boys compete on the field and are friends off the field.

@Kathy -
Nice post...my kids did not participate, and i don't have first hand experience w/ the knights, but from what i see and hear Mike has been fantastic for PA football.
Glad to see some of those kids at GUNN - go Titans.

Typical that the writing would show no support of the gunn athletes. If you want to compare players and stats, Guzman throwing for 787 passing yards 8 td's and no int in three games. While sharp plays both sides of the ball. Being a threat at wr, saftey and special teams. Lydster in the back field, 180 pounds plus running hard and giving guzman some breathing room in the back field. Only a junior. Another attribute in the back field is Moreno-Ramos blocking hard at fullback impressivley a junior also. Both backs being in their second year on varsity. Gunn's offensive line averaging from 170-185 pounds playing with hearts of lion's. I believe Gunn's athletes should be given a little more credit than what is shown.

Yes! I wish Gunn had been represented well here too! Andre is an outstanding QB and person, as well as Marcus and all the other Knights players! My boys are at Paly, but I will be cheering for all the boys on both sides of the field. I love them so! And yes, they are all great, great friends! I'm sure, friends for life. Most are like my own sons.
Mike Piha.. what can I say.. What he's done for these boys and others around the community is quite outstanding! Much love and respect to Mike from now until eternity! He's taught my boys a lot, and it's not just about a stance or how to block or run a ball. It's discipline, respect, honor and more. Lova Mike and thank you!!

Yes, I would like to give a shout out to Mike Piha. He has been in trenches for many years, including the Knights and Palo Alto Little League. He is a real leader, and willing to take on the critics.
I am a PALY fan, but I fully support how much Mike has done...whatever the outcome of the PALY/Gunn game.
Mike, and his wife, Cheryl deserve the Tall Trees Award in Palo Alto. They are now moving to San Francisco, but they simply cannot be replaced. BIG shoes to fill. It is my honor to know them.
