Poaching is a crime and poaching laws are enforced for a reason. There are many species of fish, animals, birds etc that are either in season or don't have a season that these people could have taken, even if they "were just trying to put food on the table".
Fish and Game could also have confiscated their vehicles as well. If a warning and confiscation was the only risk then there would be a lot more poaching I'm sure and many species would be endangered of becoming extinct.
Poachers know Fish and Game dept is spread thin, these people took a chance and they got caught, next time they should follow the law.
They should have also printed their names, which is another possible reason people might think twice about poaching.

So what if they were getting food. Thats why the fishery is declining in california. Too many poachers, too many people getting under sized fish, too many people getting over limits. I say cite them all, and cite them again. Throw them in jail. That excuse of feeding my family is bull!!!!! I fish all the time on the coast, I call DFG EVERY singel time I see a violation!! I will call and I don’t care who see’s me calling. SO all you poachers beware, because we are watching!!!

Poaching, overfishing and pollution are the reasons our oceans are running out sea life. We are at a serious danger of killing off all sea life in a few decades. Those poachers have committed a very serious crime and are very lucky to escape with fines. It's a shame the penalties aren't much stiffer because they all should spend a couple of years in prison to deter them and others.

To be providing for their family is fine but do it within the law. I'm glad they were caught and hope they are made to pay fine and lose all privileges going forward.
I'm in full support of the wardens and their efforts. They protect our natural resources for all to enjoy. No one is above the law. Support our wardens.

Does being poor make it legal to rob a bank? This is no different- Poaching sea life is causing tremendous, and sometime irreversible damage that hurts everybody, mostly those whose diet depends on sea food and those whose livelihood depends on the sea. Once we allow humans to make sea life extinct there will be catastrophic starvation worldwide.

13 men gathered late at night poaching crab were not planning to feed it to the wives & kiddies because they can't afford other good protein sources, like beans.

I'm wondering if people's reaction to this article would've been different if the men's city of residence was not mentioned. There's terms such as "catch and release" and "sport" fishing; and not much is said about these other ways of "poaching". We have to be fair and criticize all fishing and hunting similarly. Wildlife at this point in history be it oceanic or land animals are no match to modern weaponry or hunting equipment. In reality I've never met anyone in this country who goes out fishing or hunting to feed their family so that's also a farse. I say we call all hunting and fishing for "recreation" poaching and put an end to these double standards. People need to think outside the box for once.

Commentator, you must not be aware that about seventy percent of the world's population is dependent on the oceans for its food supply. The world's oceans are now catastrophically depleted of sea life due to overfishing, fishing in off seasons like those guys had done and pollution. Many species are now extinct or near extinction like the Chilean sea bass because of overfishing and off season fishing. At the present rate of abuse the oceans will be empty of fish in just a few decades which would cause catastrophic starvation and increase poverty and misery in many parts of the world.
Sadly you seem to be facts-free. Are you also one of those who deny man caused climate change or is that also "trash" to you?

"Global Warming" or man made climate change is trash. A political hoax supported by like minded or bought "scientists". It too will fade into history as yet another attempt to fool the fools.
Climate change has been with us forever and will continue LONG after politicions have milked all the votes they can and moved on to some other Hopium fueled ploy.
