Over fifty years ago the founding director R.G. Davis began a tradition of free theatrical performances in parks that lives on to this day. Music, comedy, satire, biting social, political commentary on the roller coaster of American life can be found in the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s original productions which are graciously performed throughout Northern California.

Palo Alto, Mitchell Park is fortunate to be hosting the Mime Troupe’s latest production: ‘For the Greater Good’ or ‘The Last Election’ on Tuesday, August 29th, 2012 , music begins at 6:30 pm, the show starts at 7:00 pm.

This year’s show exposes the minority viewpoint of the Occupy Movement, that of the much maligned one percent, based on the 19th century melodrama ‘The Poor of New York.’ Ed Holmes, who bears a striking resemblance to Dick Cheney, plays the role of capitalist banker Gideon Bloodgood. Like the stock market, fortunes rise and crash, the plot twists and turns. Great music, humor, timing and over the top characters will perhaps change people’s perspective on the Occupy Movement and the American political process. If you haven’t been watching television non-stop for years, the play might give new insights into the American people from the point of view of those who own the media.

I must admit, as a candidate who ran for office on an “Occupy Congress” platform, who baked cookies for Occupy Chicago, Occupy Oakland, Occupy San Francisco, Occupy San Jose… who was arrested and hauled to jail the Saturday before the primary, I can appreciate how art imitates life and life imitates art when it comes to politics, social movements, and family relationships. I loved the show. The actors and actresses age, die, are killed, change wigs, change sexes to play more than one role in the show, as we wear different hats and change roles in our own lives.

The performers also invite audience participation and support, including lending a hand to dismantle the stage and load it after the show into the SF Mime Troupe truck. My advice to those who have never seen one of their shows before - “Go see it! Bring a folding chair! Dress warmly and bring a blanket, just in case, some extra cash to donate to the troupe, and if you have curiosity, strength, energy, don’t be shy about pitching in and lending a hand; it is worthwhile and fun!”
