Mark-ing their territory
Around Town, posted by Editor, Palo Alto Online, on Jul 6, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and 160 fellow Facebook employees ran a half marathon through Palo Alto and Menlo Park for charity Friday, July 6. The race started at Bol Park and looped past the former Facebook offices, ending at the company's current headquarters in Menlo Park. Photos by Veronica Weber/Palo Alto Online.

Zuckerberg Ran?? Good for him, nice to see him get out there and get dirty.

Anyone know what route did they take? Seems to me that there isn't a real safe and direct pedestrian route from Palo Alto to the new Facebook campus, unless they are using the crumbling shoulders of University Ave east of East Palo Alto. Or did they cut through some of the Menlo Park industrial parks?

Good for them for organizing a nice charity event and encouraging employees to get some exercise, especially on a work day.

Might as well be the first to point out that the race raised $25 per runner. It is completely admirable their employees are running this distance (especially Zuckerberg!) and it's a great cause to direct their donation, but their PR person might want to get ahead of this before touting the fundraising angle very broadly. They kinda come off as cheap.

Re: route - my guess is that they'd take California then Oregon Avenue (frontage road for Oregon Expressway) to the bike bridge over 101. From there, you can use trails through the Baylands near the Palo Alto airport and a bike bridge over and along San Francisquito Creek in EPA to one of several roads that end at the trail (Bay Rd, Weeks St, O'Connell St, etc.), then one of the roads that parallel University (like Illinois) and would only need to run a very short distance along University to get to the trail along Bayfront Expressway.

A route through EPA may not be a lot of fun for a lone runner but I wouldn't think that a group of 160-strong would have any trouble in the middle of a work day.

Actually, $25 was just the amount each runner pledged. We were expecting the number would be much higher. When they actually collected, it was more like $20.

Look at the third photo closely. Apparently Facebook doesn't employ any women. Or maybe their job is to look cute and hand out water.

womankind - good point. There was a lack of women in all of the photos. Maybe since the photos are Mark-centric & he runs w/his personal posse? Hard to say. Maybe not many signed up in order to avoid Mark making comments about the quality of their skin, a la Sandberg.

It looked like a fun event for a great cause! WTG, Mark!
