Lesson in this is don't swerve for anything that isn't bigger than you! Stay in your lane, and if another driver changes lanes into you or cuts you off, you are better off hanging on to the wheel and letting the car's airbags do the work. So sorry for the family's loss. Heartbreaking.

Any information as to whether she was wearing her belt or had air bags? I thought properly functioning safety system was supposed to be able to protect people at least enough to survive these kinds of accidents?

Cell phone/texting shock and overreaction to sudden lane change by another car? I had an accident a year ago where I still wonder about that. I put on signal, changed lanes, but other car was actually speeding up, didn't honk, and took no defensive actions whatsoever. Luckily nobody was injured with the impact, probably because I *did* take defensive action ASAP. I think cell phone use needs to be looked at in any one car accident these days. I think a lot of lane-changes might be considered reckless but might actually be safe if the other drivers are aware of what is happening around them and the person signals the change. Oh, there's another big if .. don't get me started on people not signaling.
Anyway, it's a tragic accident however one looks at it.

While this is tragic, I don't understand how a person could be charged with hit and run, if there was no collision.
Who hasn't made a lane change without a proper signal, or done something in a manner that MAY have caused an accident, if someone was there. The man may not have seen her car, if it were in his blind spot.
The man most likely never knew what happened with her car. He'd be driving onwards, and not looking in her direction. Frankly, I think it's silly to try to place any charges on him, for having caused this accident. We should all learn from it, however, and I, for one, appreciate the tip about never swerving for anyone or anything, slowing down is best.
Many years ago, driving along Hwy 680, a huge pipe came hurling towards my front car window, and there was traffic all around me, moving at a 65MPH (or faster) clip. I could not change lanes, so I just took my foot off the accelerator, and allowed my car to slow ever so slightly, enough to let the long pipe bash out my light on the drivers side, and then, it bounced off the car behind me, to my left. I don't know what happened after that. At even 60MPH, I didn't look back. How can you?
There would be a lot of people around at 6:30PM Saturday night. Other traffic to watch out for.

If you read the accident report you would know the witness said the driver was driving wreck less before the accident. He should be held responsible for taking someone's life and not stopping. He knew what happened. Everyone else witnessed it happen. This is tragic. She was an amazing loving person with so much life to live.Think of the tragic loss this family has to endure and hope it never happens to you. Don't assume if you don't know.
