Demonstrator with rifle on Sandhill taking photos of cars
Crimes & Incidents, posted by Concerned, a resident of the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, on Jun 20, 2012 at 9:17 pm

Does anyone know what this guy's deal is?

This afternoon, I was heading East on Sandhill just off 280 and noticed a strange man at the corner where the Rosewood Hotel is with a rifle across his back, taking photos of each car passing by with a long lens.

I called the non-emergency police number to report him. They were aware and had sent officers to check on the situation earlier. Apparently, the weapon is not loaded and he has Constitutional rights to both carry the weapon and take the pictures of the cars.

He had signs up but I was focussed on safely moving past that area so couldn't see what they said.

Anyone have more info and how long he intends to be there?

I am sorry that you were startled by this. Here's a local news story from earlier this year - it doesn't seem like it, but you apparently have nothing to fear from him:

If this guy was black or middle eastern, the cops would have dragged him away immediately. Justice is different for white guys with guns.

White guy with a gun, just try it. While you might not get bagged and scragged, you will most likely get questioned, and perhaps even have moving on "suggested".

What, exactly, is he demonstrating against? Someone who works in that office complex used to be a business associate of someone who might have raped someone 24 years ago... and the alleged victim is the "former associate" of the "demonstrator"?

OK... someone he used to know might have been raped 24 years ago by someone who used to know someone who works on Sandhill Road?

As with many such "protesters," the message he's trying to give the public is unclear. What is he for, and what is he against? He wants attention, but why?
