Cautionary tale on LED rebate
Palo Alto Issues, posted by JimFruchterman, a resident of the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, on Jun 20, 2012 at 6:22 pm

I rushed recently to buy ten LED lights to take advantage of the COPA Utility rebate. I bought four different kinds at Home Depot and online. I mainly bought Philips brand bulbs and turned in my rebate.

I got zero dollars back. Turns out that the rebate only goes for Energy Star LED lights, and most LED lights don't qualify. I have no idea why a few Philips ones are and most aren't.

So, if you saw the come-on in your utility bill and were rushing for the June 30th deadline, be careful. I completely missed the fine print. This isn't as easy as picking the wattage of the bulbs and toting up your savings.

I was also taken by surprise. Anytime a new LED bulb comes out, I buy a couple, so have a wide variety of bulbs now. usually they don't pass the SAF on CRI or temp. When I recently submitted a bunch of receipts for the PA rebates, I couldn't figure out why I was only getting some rebated. Figured it was a computer glitch at first, so resubmitted twice more. Later they informed me via email that only Energy Star bulbs qualify.

I don't mind spending the extra money, but wish I didn't have to go thru the convoluted hassle of figuring out why some rebates were rejected.

eager to try the new 100w equivalent LEDs.

anyone know of a good resource that identifies the LED chips, and the CRI ratings?
