The death of Richard W. Lyman May 27 is more than the passing of a former Stanford University president and noted historian — even one who was said to be the man "who saved Stanford" during a decade of political tumult and financial crisis for the university.

Thank you, Jay for such a wonderful article about the Lymans. I really appreciate the personal remembrances you share. As a Palo Alto resident and a staff member at the Clayman Institute I am so grateful for all they have done and continue to do for our community.

Dear Jay,
Thanks for a wonderful view of Dick and Jing; another good story that personified Dick...in 1978, I was serving as the Director of Events and Services on campus, working with Bob Rosenzweig and Dr. Lyman. The Gay People's Union had scheduled Harvey Milk to speak on campus, and I encountered considerable resistance from the academic team in the building where Milk was going to speak. Dick stepped in, with Bob's encouragement, and insured that Supervisor Milk could speak in Kresge Auditorium. It was a wonderful night, and six months later, Milk was gone.
Dick Lyman supported his administrative team, let us do our work, and gave us inspiration to push the envelope...may he rest in peace and may Jing and the children find solace in all the good words being shared.
