Stanford humanities professor Stephen Hinton will give a preview lecture at 7:30 p.m. tonight, May 29, on the upcoming San Francisco Opera production of John Adams' "Nixon in China." The talk is at the First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto at 1140 Cowper St. and organized by the local chapter of the opera guild.

Stanford professor Coit D. Blacker, director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, will moderate a free panel discussion about foreign policy and the 2012 presidential election at 4:30 p.m. today, May 29, at the Bechtel Conference Center in Encina Hall, 616 Serra St., Stanford. The panel will feature Michael H. Armacost, former U.S. ambassador to Japan and the Philippines; political science professor David W. Brady, deputy director at the Hoover Institution; and David M. Kennedy, a Stanford history professor and Pulitzer Prize-winner for his book "Freedom from Fear: The American People in Depression and War, 1929-1945."
