Editorial: Election re-cap: Our recommendations
Issues Beyond Palo Alto, posted by Editor, Palo Alto Online, on May 27, 2012 at 5:43 am

California voters will participate in a different kind of primary when they vote on June 5, less than two weeks from now. The new "open primary" allows voters to select any candidate, regardless of party, for state and congressional office. The Press- Judge, Jury, Executioner...

It's amazing to me that the Palo Alto Weekly can dismiss all challenges to the entrenched Democratic incumbents in the upcoming primary election as "relatively weak and minimally-funded opponents." There is no mention of the opponent's names, background, positions. To place a statement on the ballot costs roughly $8,000. Former Senator Russ Feingold noted that for a candidate to reach a voter with his/or her message costs about $1 per voter. In our Congressional District that means it costs about $400,000 to simply reach the voters with one message. The incumbent receives 70% of her money from corporations outside the district. Why not do a story on how our pay to play system is robbing democracy, assisting the plutocracy that doesn't want to be challenged?
