Stanford University has launched a $1 billion fundraising campaign to build its new hospital and invest in medical research and teaching, and already half of that sum has been pledged by Silicon Valley companies and individuals, Stanford announced Monday.

Wow, Stanford's fundraising muscle is unequaled. All this philanthropy is so heartening. I wish tiny non-profits like the Media Center where I work had a little more flexing ability to attract donors. We're working on it! We help people plug in to skills, issues and a social network of community video creators. I love it as much as I love all that Stanford does for our community. We're important too! But it's definitely "Go Cardinal!"

Wow. I had not yet seen the artist renderings. Cantilever designs in earthquake country have made me nervous since that Sylmar hospital collapse in '71. But I suppose the architects know what they are doing...
