Take the Downtown traffic Safety "True-False"Quiz
Palo Alto Issues, posted by Midtown Guy, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on May 2, 2012 at 3:10 pm

1. Pedestrians crossing University should be aware that many

cars run red lights and there are no red-light cameras aand rarely law enforcement available, due to City budget cutbacks.

T or F

2. Cars can double-park on University as long as their

emergency flashers are on.

T or F

3. Most vehicles ignore the No Left Turn sign at the

Apple store corner. Again, little enforcement.

T or F

4. The noon hour on weekdays is the most dangerous period

along University because of tail-gating drivers on short

lunch hours, and droves of pedestrians working downtown, trying to move too fast for the congestion, again with little or no

public safety personnel.

T or F

5. Even if you are walking in a crosswalk, be aware that

red-light runners and distracted drivers will not notice you

until it's threatening (to you).

T or F

6. Be aware that lack of manpower means you almost never see

police presence until after an accident, which conditions

drivers to be willing to take chances and not getting caught.

T or F

Car drivers do see pedestrians, but they just don't care. They have to bully their way through those "right turns on red lights" because if they don't, the need to wait at least 30 seconds for the next green light. When you're making $100/hour in salary, those 30 seconds of lost time add up to real money.

Left turns are even more exciting because if they have to speed through that tiny gap in oncoming cars and then they are going to fast and they know that pedestrians will hear their squealing rubber before they plow through the crosswalk.

I bet if pedestrians started carrying baseball bats when they were crossing the streets, then cars would give them a wide berth. They already see you, but now they will fear the consequences.

7. If you are a pedestrian crossing the street while texting, you have a magic force field around you so you can't be hit by a car.

T or F

8. If you are a construction company, you can close down sidewalks and/or streets whenever you want (even if it hurts the businesses around you.

T or F

9. If you are homeless and like to yell at people, Downtown PA is a great choice!

T or F

10. In Downtown Palo Alto, if you run a red light, nothing will happen. If you can't figure out the multi-colored parking zones, it will cost you.

I encounter a lot more pedestrians crossing on red lights and almost getting hit than cars running red lights and almost hitting pedestrians.

"lack of manpower?" -- what is this, an ad for the police union?

Posted by Midtown guy, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on May 3, 2012 at 5:28 pm

No way an ad for the union--pehaps a request that the City

put more resources into University Avenue public safety and maybe

less on California Ave beautification.

True or False:

How fast you may drive over the posted speed limit is a linear relationship related to the list price of your automobile.

True or False:

Talking on a hand-held cell phone is OK if I hold it with 1 hand, held directly in front of my face while driving, & I am of an unnamed country of origin.
