class rank
Schools & Kids, posted by A Gunn parent, a member of the Gunn High School community, on Feb 21, 2012 at 10:58 am

I am a new parent, and I don't know how the school give out class rank for the students. It seems they are ranking the students based on both weighted and unweighted GPA. Is this correct? I know a lot of competitive schools have already eliminated class rank because this doesn't help the student in the college admission game and only increases stress. I know there are a lot of stress for being a student at Gunn (and Paly). Why the schools cannot eliminate the rank to help reduce stress?

Paly doesn't have class ranks, I assume Gunn doesn't either. (No Valedictorians either...)

True for Paly. You would expect Gunn to be the same. However Paly does provide a formula so that you can provide a soft estimate.

Gunn does not rank students

What I heard from the school is that Gunn counselors would put the student's rank in decile in the counselor's report to colleges. In that case, the students is still ranked.
