What happened to Culture? Restaurants, posted by mmmmMom, a resident of the Downtown North neighborhood, on Feb 19, 2012 at 10:10 pm
Does anyone know what happened to Culture - the organic frozen yogurt shop on California Avenue? We went buy last week, & they were all closed up. The people in the business next door said they had been closed for a few days, but they did not know why.

Yes, apparently Culture is out of business. Too bad, it was a wonderful place.
I do wonder what happened. Starting in January after the holiday break the store was closed and there was a sign hanging in the front that the family that owned the business was on "vacation". Some time in early February that sign went down and a simple "Shut" sign went up. And now it is permanently shut down.
It is too bad. The California Av retail area is bustling and there were often lines during the day at Culture. I wonder if this is a case of "collapsed economy" as the other comment suggests or something else. From the looks of the demand I saw for this store it felt like this was a viable business.

When I observe the large number of yogurt shops, the large number of nail salons some with people getting their toenails done, $250 birthday parties for children, and people buying a cupcake for $3, I begin to wonder whether these aren't just the outer indicators or moral decay combined with too much money.

Just my opinion, but the yogurt was not that good, full of ice crystals. The favors and the topping were limited, and the prices for all this were outrageous. Not a good deal in a bad economy.
