How can we stop thread-muck?
Palo Alto Issues, posted by Resident, a resident of Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Jul 12, 2007 at 7:54 am

Well, another useful and interesting thread has been shut down because of a rapid devolution into the muck. It was the "Why has my thread been deleted?" one

Web Link

Are we doomed to descend into slimey muck with every attempt at a useful, thoughtful conversation?

We have to fix this or this will become simply a little local online chat for superficial subjects.

Any ideas?

I WANT to understand what drives people to believe the way they do, and I believe the best way for me to do that is to read an opinion backed with a source for factual back-up.

my post was the cause of the bile posted by Dr Ferragamo and the reason that the thread was closed--too bad--Dr Ferragamo response was quite enlightening and it is unfortunate that the editors chose to close the thread (though they did leave his vile post online).

I think that is good also since it will show most people the kind of crap that some people post on this forum.

As is the case with any post regarding Israel, there are certain persons (or one person posting under different names) that posts racist, anti-semitic lies in order to poison the discussion.

It is unfortunate that Dr Ferragamo is not willing to engage in civil debate in which people provide the facts for their positions and reply in a civil manner. It would have been interesting to see Dr Ferragamo's facts that the jews were responsible for 9/11

perhaps then, posts, regardless of opinion, should remain as long as they are footnoted for factual reference, or linked to a source..otherwise they are deleted.

maybe that would let the rest of us still participate in learning, while getting rid of the those who are here to simply name call or who do not want to footnote.

I have an idea. How about keeping the Town Square forums focused on local issues ONLY?

Much of the bile seems to be generated in discussions about the Middle East. There are a bazillion or so places on the Internet to discuss those topics.

But there aren't that many places to talk about Peninsula issues.

Yes, some people get off on rants on the Palo Alto-centric discussions too (Mandarin immersion anyone??) but there are few places for residents to discuss our local goings-on.

Keep Town Square local.

Well, there are topic threads for just PA, but I am still hoping we can somehow have a civilized way of discussing national and international topics. There is not one forum that is national or international that I know of that isn't bile filled. I stay away from them, and just keep hoping we can make it work here..maybe I should give it up.
