Moffett Activity
Issues Beyond Palo Alto, posted by Mark, a resident of the Community Center neighborhood, on Jul 11, 2007 at 2:11 pm

Anybody noticing a lot of fighter jets taking off from Moffett lately? Just curious if anybody knows why that might be...

Heavy jets of some description flew over my house about an hour or so ago, no idea why and they had gone before we could get outside, just the noise left behind. My sons got excited though, asking where the air show was?

I think I've seen a bit more activity too. On Tuesday, I saw a C-130 on takeoff. I guess he was travelling north/northwest. I've often heard the distinctive sound of the C-130's in the distance, but usually can't see them flying. Today around 1pm, I was on Oregon near Middlefield, and saw 1 formation of what looked like an F/A-18, maybe an F-5 and something else like an A4. If I was right, those could be from an agressor squadron, or maybe NASA planes. I saw a couple more Hornets flying behind them a few seconds later.

You'll never hear me complain about it - I love seeing those planes and hearing the sweet sound of freedom. I used to live in San Diego, and it was really a rush to see the Hornets flying over Torrey Pines out over the ocean.

The jets were here to provide the fly past for the All Star Game. As they flew in the other night right over my house, they woke me up. Then I watched as all four F-18s (I think) took off yesterday around 1:00 PM. Not to worry I don't think they'll be back anytime soon, unless we have another All Star Game!!!! They sure were impressive.

John - good info - I was curious about that as I hear the flyover while I was downtown yesterday.

I was eating lunch in my apartment when the jets took off. Everyone in my complex came out to see what was causing such awesome noise. I was an intern at NASA Ames Research Center a couple years ago. My office looked out at the end of the air field, so I got a chance to see a variety of planes take off. Mostly C-130s use the field but sometimes I was treated to NASA aircraft taking off and landing. I love Moffett Field and I hope they let Hanger One stand.
