Portola Valley's proximity to untamed wilderness is a major draw and I appreciate Bay City News' referral to the CA Dept. of Fish and Game's www.keepmewild.org web site as a reminder about how to better share the land with many creatures.

I don't get it … if you are supposed to throw rocks at a mountain lion, how do you reach down for a rock to pick it up and appear bigger at the same time?

Carry a slingshot and have the rocks ready to fire. Maybe the school kids could practice drills with a Cougar Target

Seriously, they need to fear even the toddlers.
