Planning for the future of Cubberley Community Center will likely take center stage in 2012, along with growing school-district enrollment and a shrinking budget, according to school-district officials.

This is long overdue, but I am so pleased to see that the school board is talking about this at last.
Interestingly, it is not the present board that will ultimately make any decisions but the next board which means that all candidates will have to make their views on this known from the starting block.
For the elections, candidates need to know and publicise on their views on Cubberley, rising enrollment and school calendar. No wishywashy feel good candidates need apply.

Good to see the city moving toward some common sense decision making and planning. The city can no longer afford the Cubberley deal, along with many other high price niche projects that need to be shelved.

PAUSD needs a long-term master plan for facilities. I would like the Board of Education to stop wringing their hands over lack of certainty about enrollment projections (projections are ALWAYS uncertain--everyone uses them for planning purposes). Direct PAUSD staff to create a plan and make sure they get it done in a time frame that will allow informed collaboration about the Cubberley site with the city.
Ms. Townsend, the city and school district don't have different schedules. The city is your tenant and can opt to end the lease covenant agreement when its term is up. That schedule IS the schedule. If the district does not responsibly demonstrate a strong effort to collaborate in this process, they should not be surprised about political and financial repurcussions.
Direct staff to create a master plan. It is long overdue.

With regard to the future of Cubberley. Since the School District stopped the City selling their 8 acres to Foothill College, the PAUSD should either buy back those 8 acres from the City; or negotiate a land swap whereby the School District takes back those buildable 8 acres and exchanges them for 8 acres of Cubberley's playing fields.
The City should then sign a Covernent to maintain their 8 acres of playing fields in the same way they maintain Terman's playing fields.
The School District will then regain control of all the buildings at Cubberley together with the tenants, and the tenant's rental income. It may not be $6.1 Million but it will allow the School District flexibility in deciding it's future educational requirements.
