Ground beef recall
Issues Beyond Palo Alto, posted by Walter_E_Wallis, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on Jun 11, 2007 at 3:09 pm

This latest outbreak of E-Coli in ground beef shows it is past time to require all ground meat and poultry in interstate commerce to be irradiation sterilized, then hermetically packaged and labeled, and for all unsterilized foods to be so labeled and kept separate, over in the “organic” section. I believe that the producers are doing everything in their power to protect the purity of their product, but I also believe that is not enough. The canneries of my youth were meticulous in their cleanup, and yet it was the final cooking after canning that killed the bugs. No mater how clean dairies try to be, and they indeed try, they still have to pasteurize. There have been too many deaths and too many days lost to illness to delay any more. Pure food = sterile food.
