Cafe Brioche
Restaurants, posted by john, a resident of the Charleston Meadows neighborhood, on Apr 12, 2007 at 12:30 pm

I read the reviews and decided to try it for breakfast. It's been a long time since I was there. Previously, I went for lunch in order to have the oyster sandwich, which I loved.

The coffee was ordinary, even bland.

The grilled smoked trout was a thin slice with some bones. It was tasteless. Along with it came a tiny dish with what was supposed to be sour cream with capers. It tasted like tarter sauce to me.

The "potato pancake" mentioned on the menu for this dish turned out to be nothing more than hash browns, browned on top and mushy inside.

The poached egg was okay, cooked solid. If I had wanted to spread it on toast, I would have prefered it less cooked.

I tried the scone, which had been given rave reviews. It was baked perhaps too well, made of whole wheat with a few cranberries, and was very crumbly. I was glad it wasn't sugary but I found it uninteresting. If one likes crumbly, then it was good. The best thing I liked about the meal was the butter. I wasn't given a choice about the flavor of jam, but was given what seemed to be rasberry jam. I appreciated that the butter and jam came in separate little ramkins. There was also a tiny slice of pineapple and orange on the plate.

On the whole I didn't like this breakfast and would recommend Cafe Sophia in Midtown instead. I like its Afghan breakfast.
