Grace Mah's appointment to the Santa Clara County Board of Education is provisional. Web Link
"The provisional appointment of Grace H. Mah to the Santa Clara County Board of Education would become effective in a little less than a month, unless a petition calling for a special election and containing a sufficient number of signatures is filed in the office of the county superintendent of schools by April 27, 2007.
According to the California Education Code, a special election can be called if the petition is signed by a number of registered voters equal to at least 1.5 percent of the number of registered voters of the district at the time of the last regular election for board members."

"By law the appointment maintains a "provisional" status for one month, giving interested parties time to provide input to the board. A vote that would make the appointment official is scheduled for the board's May 2 meeting."
Although I have opposed the specific plan for MI that Grace Mah has pushed in Palo Alto, I think it may be a good thing that she was appointed to the SSCBOE, because I have never been against Mandarin Immersion instruction -- I am for it -- and I think an immersion charter school located in Mountain View could solve the problems and get a program that is better than anyone initially envisioned. In that case, Grace could be an advocate and asset for not only the program, but for Palo Alto. Please take a look at the suggestion -- it could be a way to put the rancor in the past and work together with someone who clearly wants to be involved in education locally: Web Link
The Board felt that all three candidates were qualified to serve.
