Top debater from Paly wins many arguments, but not all

This spring, experienced debater Travis Chen concluded his high school career as a national quarterfinalist in the Lincoln-Douglas division at the Tournament of Champions in Kentucky.

During debates, how does one handle personal attacks and name-calling, tactics that take the focus off the issue at hand? I see that a lot, and by adults that disagree on public issues.

You recognize it for the fallacy it is and call it out: Web Link

On these forums you see a lot of ad hominem Web Link and straw man Web Link fallacies. Just identify them for what they are and the poster's whole argument deflates. They lose complete credibility.

Travis is a nice kid and a really brilliant debater. Kudos to the Weekly for covering this and not just sports.

The subtitle has a typo in Travis's name. His last name is Chen, as correctly identified in the body of the article.

Travis is a nice kid and incredibly talented in many ways. So is her sister. Their parents are very grateful for the gifts in their children. Travis won his parents' hearts many times over (and I do not think he considers them as debate opponents).
