FCE does a great job supporting lower-income kids of color (and their families) in this largely privileged, competitive white community. All children, and especially lower-income kids of color, need adults to act as "trusted guides on a challenging journey." This image of the positive and important adult role, offered by FCE's Waring, is worth remembering.

Presuming who kids are, based on what they look like, or where they came from, is not tuning in to who each individual child is, listening carefully from early on to help identify and support their strengths, learn what motivates them, and understand what they and their families need.

Underestimating a child's potential, and providing incorrect information and feedback to a child based on false assumptions, is often the result of stereotyping, with harmful effects to the child and the larger community.

Being present for kids is a Number One attribute that kids often identify as lacking in many adults. FCE is a good role model in setting this as its goal, and walking the talk.
