In response to the rise in identity thefts, Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss and District Attorney Jeff Rosen will host a forum on identity-theft prevention tonight, March 15, at Avenidas.
Palo Alto had 182 cases of identity theft of various kinds in 2011, up 7.7 percent from 2010, according to Palo Alto police statistics.
The forum is free and is open to the public. Speakers include Neal O’Farrell, executive director of the Identity Theft Council, Palo Alto police Sgt. James Reifschneider, Patti Mcrae, director of mediation services, Consumer Protection Unit, Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, and Janet Berry, Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
The event takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 450 Bryant St., La Comida Room, Palo Alto. RSVPs can be made to ashley.allen@bos.sccgov.org or by calling 408-299-5059.
Anyone know what percentage of identity theft comes from an individual attack (e.g. stealing a wallet) vs. mass attacks (e.g. hacking into corporate databases)?
Seems to me that the latter types of crimes are the biggest problem. Should we choose what banks and businesses to do business with based on their reputation for data security?
what about lifelock and other internet i.d. theft companies? i can remember what palo alto was like before the inquisitive internet and cell phone devices, etc. all of this just cultivates more fear and paranoia, psychological disturbances, etc.
Will this session be recorded, and made available for the general public to view?
If not, why not?
