Jordan vs JLS

Original post made by zs, Midtown, on Feb 29, 2012

I have a child that is going to middle school next year. Our home school is JLS, but Jordan is a lot closer to our house, but more importantly, since he is going to Poly for high school, and he isn't not the kind that makes friends easily, we figure that it might be better for him to go to Jordan (assuming that he can), so that he can make some friends before going to high school.

We just moved here last year, and don't know much about the middle school, and are wondering the pros and cons of each middle school.

They are both great schools and I believe about 1/2 to 1/3 of JLS attends Paly. The negative of going to Jordan would be loosing contact with his elementary friends. You can request a transfer which may or may not be granted based on how full the schools are.

This is something you should have considered before buying your house. I suggest touring the schools to get a feel for the children and schools. Or see if your child can shadow at the middle schools.

Our son went to JLS and then on to Paly in 2010. It worked out very well. Half of his JLS class went to Paly by the way, including his good friends, from our immediate neighborhood. JLS was a very good school. We were very happy with it and are now very happy with Paly.

Our oldest child went to Jordan years ago, before boundaries were changed. There is a 10 year gap between the 2 children, so my opinion may be a bit out-of-date on this, but we liked JLS in 2007-2010 much better than we liked Jordan in 1997-2000.

Per "Done Both"s disclaimer about the 10-year gap, lots has changed in 12 years at Jordan. Administration has changed at both schools, for the better. The current principal at JLS was vice principal at Jordan and we were sad to see her leave. The current principal at Jordan is great too. And the current Paly principal is outstanding.
