Major meeting on school calendar tonight (11/29)

Original post made by JT, Crescent Park, on Nov 29, 2011

The PAUSD board tonight will hear a response from Supt. Skelly about how he will mitigate the problems with the new school calendar that goes into effect next fall. This is the calendar moves up the start of school to the middle of August, moves finals to before Christmas break, and makes the semesters unequal in terms of the number days students attend school. When the board adopted the calendar back in the spring, the three board members said they would drop the new calendar if Dr. Skelly didn't address the board's specific concerns. I see from this morning's Daily Post that his report came up short in the eyes of some observers. I don't know why the Weekly/PAOnline isn't doing any coverage in advance of tonight's meeting. Maybe they don't want a big crowd. I think that's the reason why Dr. Skelly waited to before the Thanksgiving break to release his report, possibly thinking that people would be busy over the holiday and not think about it. But I hope the public turns out for tonight's meeting. A new calendar will affect the lives of thousands of students and their families. I think this new calendar will just increase the stress of students, particularly those seniors who will have to be studying for finals in mid-December at a time when their college applications are due. This calendar wasn't well thought out.
