A driver who fled from police by driving the wrong way on U.S. Highway 101 Tuesday (Aug. 30) was stopped after California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers rammed the car and pinned it between the police cruiser and a concrete divider wall, police spokesman Officer Art Montiel said in a statement.
The incident began in Redwood City at 2 a.m. after officers tried to stop a gray Honda Civic that was weaving heavily on southbound 101 south of the Woodside Road exit. The driver began to slow and appeared to exit at Marsh Road when the suspect suddenly accelerated away from the officers.
The officers ran the Honda’s license plate, which returned as a stolen vehicle from Hayward. As the Honda neared Willow Road, the suspect slowed abruptly, made a complete U-turn, and began driving the wrong way down the highway, Montiel said.
Officers immediately recognized the extreme danger the wrong-way vehicle posed to oncoming motorists and rammed the Honda.
The officers were able to pin the Honda between their police cruiser and a concrete divider wall. The suspect still made numerous attempts to accelerate away causing its front tires to spin and emit thick smoke, Montiel said.
The Honda ultimately became immobilized and the driver was taken into custody without further incident. The front passenger complained of pain and was transported to Stanford Medical Center. The driver’s identity has not been released.
Stop reckless driving by making the penalties commensurate with the risk to society. Reckless driving penalties should be at least as tough as for attempted murder. Society has been coddling these terrorists for too long.

If the perp is in custody for a serious crime, the cops may not release the name immediately, to avoid compromising the investigation. Responsible journalists will report when the name is released and charges are filed, right?
