If petty criminals had brains they would not be petty criminals. It does not take much intelligence to see that it is a pretty dead-end career. We all did stupid things when we were younger that we would never have done later on. The problem is that now, if this guy gets smart and tries to go straight, he is going to have one very ugly blot on his record that could prevent him from getting jobs, housing, a mate, etc. Used to be you could just go west and start over, now your dumb mistakes follow and haunt you for the rest of your life.
