Palo Alto approves massive Stanford Hospital expansion

Stanford Hospital Medical Center's four-year quest to get Palo Alto's permission for a massive expansion of its hospital facilities glided past the finish line Monday night when an enthusiastic City Council voted to approve what members routinely call the largest development project in the city's history.

Well I'm glad the City was able to milk 23.2 Million out of Stanford for various Healthcare programs while at the same time the City is reducing health care for their own employees and retirees.

Lot of give aways here. Glad everyone is so happy.

The location of the old hospital was a ridiculous location, requiring you to wend your way from 101 down University, through downtown and the campus, and then through the shopping center. Using the same location for the new hospital is an order of magnitude more ridiculous. Traffic will be a nighmare. Oh, and by the way, the water demand for the expanded facility will be such as to require all of Palo Alto to engage in water rationing. Let's see how loud the brainless cheerleaders for the expansion cheer when that goes into effect.

Is that the only way to get to the hospital. A gross exaggeration if there ever was one.

As we see when some people do not get their way, they resort to name calling of those that supported this long overdue project.

Perhaps Howard can get together with certain former councilmembers to mourn the vote.

Howard has a point. In less than a week Stanford will no longer be running a bus service during the weekends. The old VTA 86 used to serve the front of the hospital throughout the year, and the VTA 35, the back, if I'm not mistaken. But now, and for quite a few years, if it's summer and the weekend you can only get in as far as Arboretum Road, that is, between the main Shopping Center and Crate and Barrel. I would have thought that between them Stanford and VTA could have done a better job of providing access all year long, but that has not happened.

Congratulations to the excellent efforts of so many to bring this important improvement to the town of Palo Alto. It is always easier to see the glass half empty and find the flaws in any change that comes to a community. This project is filled with challenges which took years to discuss trying to meet the needs of both sides of the town and gown teams. Dispite the many problems this is an amazing opportunity for good growth that provides exceptional health care to the residents. WELL DONE city manger, city council and Stanford leadership!!

Hey, great idea!

The roads are already jammed and you can't park downtown, near California Cafe or near University!

$2 million isn't going to cover the lost sales tax revenue.

Check your facts, crabby. They say the garages in downtown palo alto are undErused. Sounds like more of the anti-Stanford hysteria that is fueled by exaggerations, lies, and factoids

This is over, but it will linger on these pages as Paloaltoonline tries to whip up at least a little frenzy and acrimony in the community.

I repeat: It's over, and the hospital project will go forward at last. Congrats to all responsible for getting this project back on track.

With friends like this, who needs enemies? Stanford seems to have all these people just waiting in the wings. Since when did my a.m. become so defensive, I wonder? The other thing I wonder about is what this hospital will look like in the world that it's going to be part of.

The new hospital buildings look beautiful.

But the traffic issues still worry me. Stanford needs to do more to address the pending traffic standstills. The deals with Menlo Park and Palo Alto appear to be fixed cost based upon predicted traffic patterns and not a function of the actual traffic patterns. That should be addressed.

At least 50% of cars are from out of town.

Long ago Stanford built the trains and railroad tracks.
They need to get back into that business and get BART
extended from Millbrae to Union City to complete the loop.

They also need to redo the PA train station and make it modern and electric. Perhaps a highrise with a hotel.

That would be the perfect gateway to Stanford, not the diesel 1940s train terminal we have now.

But to had out millions on Caltrains passes is a reactionary action
and not visionary and planning for the future when dependence on oil is drastically reduced, issues of green house gases dominate and traffic has come to stand still in PA at some portions of the day.

Stanford has all the technical know how, all the industrial connections to get it done.

And they should doit especially since they are mostly tax-exempt and the cost of the project would roughly equal the taxes they would pay if they were a for profit corporation.

view101, the problems of traffic cannot be fully mitigated by building more roads and parking structures. The density of the peninsula is reaching the point that a greater emphasis on public transportation is necessary, hence why Stanford is handing out Caltrain passes (Caltrain needs all the financial help it can get right now anyway).

It is also not the university's responsibility to improve public transportation infrastructure. Why in the world would it be? If you don't like the way that BART/Caltrain are coordinated, then talk to the counties/state. Don't blame Stanford for our legislators' lack of insight.
