Full day kindergarten

Original post made by Amy, Green Acres, on Mar 23, 2011

We just got a letter informing us that Barron Park school is going to start full day Kindergarten next fall. Does this mean other schools will be changing too?

Only BP will be doing it.

Amy,

The extended day kindergarten is a trial that will be offered only at Barron Park next year. It is optional for families. The Board of Education approved the pilot March 8. For more information about the thinking behind it, see Discussion Item 9 here: Web Link

Barron Park's academic achievement falls below the rest of PAUSD so this is their way of trying to catch up.

Hopefully, PAUSD will select a principal who can raise the morale at the school.

"Barron Park's academic achievement falls below the rest of PAUSD"

Barron Park's API score was 861. Ohlone was only 887. What's Ohlone's strategy for "trying to catch up"?

Does it make sense to implement it district-wide if the other PAUSD elementaries are already in the 900s for API?

Oh, that's right, the School Board just wants their schools to shine and do not care about student stress.

Escondido is at 893, Ohlone at 887, Barron Park is 861.

Not All That You See,

Ohlone doesn't care about API scores. That's their appeal as a choice school.

Parent, Oh really? I guess the appeal extends for parents to be happy their "academic achievement falls below the rest of PAUSD"

Not all that you see: You are absolutely correct. Type A parents have no interest in Ohlone.

I usually just stick to correcting misinformation and not adding my opinion, but I couldn't resist, so this is an opinion (based on some experience, however):
"Type A parents have no interest in Ohlone."
That's funny. Parents who need such control over their child's day that they can't simply send their child to the neighborhood school. Sounds like Type A-ish to me.

I think Parent is being deliberately obtuse.

Are you posters clued-out? Parent is correct. Ohlone is not a neighborhood school, it's a choice school. A choice school with liberal, non-traditional methods of teaching, where they mix the grade levels, have no assigned homework, and engage in projects. I know of someone whose child attended Parents Nursery and choose to send her children to Duveneck and the other parents could not believe she was not sending them to Ohlone like they were.

Is it just the kinders or is it the whole school?
