San Francisco to charge Penninsula commuters $6 toll fee

Original post made by Penninsula resident, Midtown, on Dec 13, 2010

San Francisco officials proposed to charge Peninsula commuters $6 daily toll fee for entering/exiting San Francisco from the south. San Mateo County leaders reacted by threatening to enact their own toll of $12 a day for San Francisco residents to enter the Peninsula from the north. The toll battle is about to begin.
Tolls is a form of tax and the tax noose is tightening more and more.

I'd rather see toll money pay for our freeways than to have that money come out of property and income taxes like it does now.

Palo Alto needs to implement this idea as well. We are suffering from too much traffic and it is negatively impacting our quality of life. Not only would residents of other cities be charged a toll, but those PA residents that dare to shop outside of Palo Alto would be charged a toll also. In addition a double toll will be charged to those people that drive down embarcadero Road.

The toll makes sense for San Francisco just like it does for London. It does not make sense for San Mateo or Palo Alto.

The bigger question is how they will spend this money. What they should do is use it to improve Caltrain to enable those of us down the Peninsula a reasonable alternative to driving.

This would make sense. Everything else is playing games.

Freedom of movement is inherent in our culture. Before we give it up, imagine when everybody gets into it. Toll booths at every city limit? And Frisco, especially, should pay the price for her freeway revolt. No tolls until you can drive through the city without paying.

I have reduced my visits to S.F. owing to other factors already - crime, aggressive panhandlers at Union Square, costly difficult parking, etc. - though of course S.F. still is lucky to have undeniable natural attractions, they are making a mistake to push this ridiculous revenue-generating scheme and will reap a LOT of resentment if it goes into effect.

And how would one demonstrate such a resentment?
By not driving to the city?

Midtown resident - the County of San Mateo is proposing to show its resentment by"enacting their own toll of $12 a day for San Francisco residents to enter the Peninsula from the north."

This seems to be a great way to drive businesses out of San Francisco or at least get start-ups to stay out of the City.

Thank goodness, the proposal was "killed" today.

Don't miss out on the discussion!
