City attorney retirement is new opportunity

The announcement that City Attorney Gary Baum will retire Oct. 31 after six years heading Palo Alto's legal department provides the City Council a solid opportunity to examine the role of both the office and the new attorney.

I am curious about the basis for the pronouncements that Baum was "personally liked" and that he "deserves credit for some cost-cutting" in the City Attorney's Office. According to my knowledge and sources, there are many who would dispute both statements, and I question the appropriateness of your newspaper making them without attribution, explanation or alternative viewpoint.
