Martha Kanter pushes to boost student performance nationwide

From a hushed corner office overlooking the Capitol dome and the Washington Mall, former Midpeninsula resident Martha Kanter pursues on a grand scale her quest to help the underdog. Kanter, chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District from 2003 to 2009, was tapped last year by President Barack Obama to be undersecretary of education -- the first top-level federal education official with a deep community-college background.

Martha is a treasure. We were lucky to have her at Foothill-DeAnza for so long and the country is lucky to have her energy and skill in promoting the role of higher education in building a competitive and prosperous economy.
