A 32-year-old East Palo Alto man who was struck by a Redwood City police officer’s car early Monday morning remained in critical condition at a local hospital today, a police captain said.

The officer was pulling into the parking lot of a Denny’s restaurant at 1201 Broadway around 2:45 a.m. to respond to a report of an assault when he struck Francisco Huerta a short distance from the driveway, Redwood City police Capt. Ron Matuszak reported.

Huerta, the victim of the assault, was thrown to the asphalt and suffered serious internal injuries, Matuszak said.

He was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition today, Matuszak said.

The group that had been assaulting Huerta fled in a green sport utility vehicle and remained at large today, according to Matuszak.

The officer who struck Huerta has been with the Redwood City Police Department for about two years and was placed on administrative leave while the case is reviewed, Matuszak said.

“The officer was trying to be of some assistance, and he’s very sad that he struck our victim,” Matuszak said.

  1. First you’re in the vicinity of Denny’s – already a bad sign. Then you get assaulted, then run over by the guy coming to your rescue? The poor, poor victim. I hope he recovers.

  2. Sad thing about this. The suspects in the green car got away after assaulting the poor victim and sooner or later the Redwood City Cops will get away running him over. Which leaves a crippled victim who’s mostly likely to be broke as a joke. Just keeping it real!!

  3. Poor judgement rookie.Hope you laern how to protect and serve in a productive manner. You hitting the victim and throwing him to the ground was no accident, so dont be sorry because your not.Your sorry because you use poor judgement.

  4. G-town, your post would imply that the officer intentionally struck the man. It is also harshly judgemental based on that assumption. Do you have any evidence that this is the case? I find it hard to believe that this was intentional.

If the event WAS intentional, then I would like to know more about it. Was the victim fleeing the officer? Why? Was he standing still when he was hit? How did that work? It seems that there is a lot to this story that we do not know.

The EPA police have a VERY tough job, and as we have seen recently gunplay is not infrequent there. They need all the support they can get, and I would prefer not to assume any blame on them without the facts.

  5. The officer was not from East Palo Alto, he was from Redwood City. The victim was from EPA. Learn to read.

Regardless, the police departments in this area get away with far too much such ‘negligence’, to put it kindly.

Do you have your GED? By the way your write, it sure doesn’t seem so. People who think like you are the reason why Police Officers have job security.
